**ONLY ON OUR THURSDAY NIGHT GULLAH GEECHEE DINNER CRUISE**
The Gullah region once extended north to the Cape Fear area off the Coast of North Carolina and south near the Jacksonville area off the coast of Florida. Today the Gullah live in the low country region of South Carolina and Georgia, which includes the Sea Islands and coastal plains. These African-American Gullah people and their language are also called Geechee. Some believe that the term Geechee is related to the Ogeechee River near our historic city of Savannah. The Gullah people preserve their culture and heritage more than any other African-American community in the United States. They speak an English-based Creole language containing many African loanwords and significant influences from African languages in grammar and sentence structure. Gullah storytelling, cuisine, music, folk beliefs, crafts, farming and fishing traditions all exhibit strong influences from West and Central African cultures.
What will you learn?
You will submerge yourself in the history and culture of the Gullah Geechee people. You will learn about their travels from Africa. You will be able to interact and learn Negro Spirituals, traditional Gullah dances, and how to play games that the Gullah children once played. You’ll learn about Gubers, Kazoos, and African-American Religions. Aboard the River Street Riverboat Gullah Geechee Cruise you will enjoy a performance, story telling, dance and music presented by the Gullah Geechee Institute. Once you are able to complete your worksheet you’ll earn your Black History Badge!
What will you get?
Two hour cultural Gullah Geechee Entertainment Cruise with a buffet dinner, Pre-show presented by the Gullah Geechee Institute for Girl Scouts educational time, Black History Badge for Each Girl, and a River Street Riverboat Kazoo for Each Girl *Your troop will need to purchase a Black History Book and donate it to a local library. The Captain will turn the boat around and you’ll head south on the Savannah River where you’ll continue to learn about our beautiful historic city. The Captain fully narrates this entire cruise.
